Dear Cantus family and friends,
I wanted to take the time to write a letter to you all to give an update on my vocal health and the reason for my absence from the ensemble.
I’ve been rehearsing and performing with a polyp on my right vocal fold for about two years. It was the cause of my three-month absence back in 2017 and has been a daily challenge to work around in my professional and personal life.
My doctors and I have been carefully monitoring the polyp since my first absence and have been successful in walking the tightrope of meeting the demands of Cantus while trying to prevent further negative changes to the physical vocal mechanism.
Recently, it has become clear that in order for me to once again have full and unhindered use of my voice it is time for a surgical intervention.
I am truly grateful to my fellow artists and staff, the Cantus board, and to all of you for being so supportive during my last absence and for bearing with me over these next months. It has been a somewhat circuitous path, but I and my medical team have confidence that the final outcome will be a much improved and sustainable vocal reality.
I will see you around at concerts and other Cantus functions and look forward to re-joining the ensemble likely after the new year.
Sincerely,
Paul Scholtz
