Interim Executive Director Report
January 23, 2017
Reported by Jocelyn Hale on January 20, 2017
Major Artistic Contracts:
Romeo and Juliet
I’ve been in touch with all R&J partners. We plan to devote the January 23, 2017 board meeting to making a final decision about this project given the financial realities.
Development & Finance
Finance
Cash flow is stable. As you’ve heard, Jeff Bina has accepted a new job. The timing is as good as it could be for Cantus but finding his replacement will need to be a first focus of Joe.
Grants
The staff worked all last month with the support of a professional grants writers to complete MSAB and Target. As of this writing, MSAB is submitted and Target is close. I traded my hours with the grant writer so we could stay on budget. February has a few grant reports but no major deadlines.
Foundations
We got $5,000 from Getty last month. This was the same as last year but not in the budget (they don’t let us apply).
FY17 individuals
Individuals are on budget and coming in as expected.
Mary Bean has been in contact with us regarding our additional $100,000 over 3-4 years to help with capacity building (salaries). Joe and Wendy will meet with Athwin staff in late February or March.
Sponsorships
Frederickson & Bryan will let us hear in early February.
This is an area that needs attention. $20,000 is in the FY17 budget.
Public Relations
Quiet press time.
Internal Structures and Management & Search
Executive Director Search
Joe Heitz has accepted and starts in the office on January 25th in order to have a little time with the singers before they go out on tour. He is staying in my apartment through Feb 1 so I’ll get some informal time with him for questions.
I am putting together a list of priorities for Joe from my perspective.
Performance Reviews
All singer 360 reviews are completed for the the year.
Employee Handbook & systems
Jeff, Joey, and I have written a strong draft handbook (based on the recently updated Loft handbook). This needs to be reviewed and approved by the board and should be an early focus for Joe.
My Hours:
Cantus has 20 hours budgeted for me in January. I’ll go over 10-15 hours but will donate this extra time.
Final words
Thank you for this wonderful opportunity. I’ve been so impressed with the staff, board, and singers. I’ve also enjoyed the chance to learn about the music world and to hear the enchanting singing of Cantus on a regular basis. I was touched by the tribute at the last board meeting. You have a new Cantus super-fan.
With all best wishes,
Jocey
