OPERATIONS
Last week we started our rehearsals for the 25th season! We are so excited to have Alex Nishibun join us, and he showed up ready to go and has already gone above and beyond. After just one day of rehearsal we sang for an MPR donor event and Alex joined us to perform Biebl’s Ave Maria (there is a little clip on our Facebook page if you if you haven’t seen it already). We are about a week and a half into working on the music for One Giant Leap, but we also have a multitude of one time performances we are preparing for as well. MPR invited us to host Bring The Sing at the State Fair again this year and that will be on Friday August 30 at 2pm. We will be leading many group sing-alongs as well as performing a handful of our own solo music. The following week we have our season preview as well as a performance highlighting our 2020-21 touring show at the Arts Midwest Showcase. Next month we will be down at St. Olaf for our first performance of One Giant Leap. It is fitting that we kick off our 25th season where Cantus started, and it is even more exciting because we will also be debuting the winning piece from our Young and Emerging Composers Competition, Discoveries, by current St. Olaf senior Grace Brigham! This is the start to what will be a very busy and fulfilling season for us, and we are looking forward to all of the exciting opportunities.
PROGRAMMING
We are very excited about the beginning of our 25th Anniversary Season! We have been rehearsing our "One Giant Leap" program for the past two weeks, and it has been great to see in action how our efforts with the "Young and Emerging Composer Competition" have given results. We are including two pieces from the pool of submissions, and we are very excited to premier them in our Fall show. In addition to that, we will also be premiering a brand new commission by Catherine Dalton, and one original composition from our very own Chris Foss!
We had our first programming meeting of the season where we decided on our Bring the Sing with MPR at the State Fair setlist. So join us at the end of this week for Bring the Sing at the State Fair. Cantus will be leading a community singing experience, interspersed with our own solo performance on Friday at 2pm.
Season preview is quickly approaching, and Cantus has selected some great pieces to showcase during the preview!
The ensemble was approached by composer Griffin Candy with a very exciting project for a commission for our 2020-2021 Fall show! We have been in talks with him, trying to find how to make the most out of this project in which the idea is to include newly written texts/poems by diverse poets.
