January 13: Copyright agreement signed
- Lists Rothstein, Tim Takach and Erick Lichte as creators of “All is Calm.” (no credit for Cantus)
- Gives PR exclusive right to make all decisions about the work.
- PR will share royalties with Takach and Lichte (70/21.5/8.5%)
- Assigns all copyright to Peter
- Gives Cantus right of first refusal to perform in MN (by February 15)
- Gives Cantus right of first refusal for any other professional production (does not include schools or universities)
- Provides 5% of royalties from subsidiary activities (theater licensing, etc) to Cantus and 5% to TLD. This agreement is good for 10 years through 2018.
2012 PR begins to license All is Calm to other theaters.
(Erich Lichte’s Chor Leoni will present the show in Vancouver in 2014.)
Various issues under consideration
Revenue/expenses
- Pantages run (6 concerts/4 days) has a similar return to 2-3 Christmas with Cantus concerts
- After expenses, tour fee for AIC is about the same as a Cantus only performance
- AIC has brought Cantus into some major cities and venues, but the booking return rate for the ensemble is poor.
- AAM can’t predict interest after the centenary in 2014 (2015 and beyond)
Relationships
- AIC is Peter’s property. Minimal if any collaboration. Entire relationship has been difficult.
- TLD and Hennepin Theatre Trust are working more closely together than ever before. Cantus is odd man out.
- The touring production is often a disappointment to presenters who expect costumes, etc. even if they are told it is a concert version.
- AAM has never been the best choice to manage/sell this production. They have minimal relationships with correct venues; are not a good choice for a fully staged theatrical tour
Artistic concerns
- Mixed feelings in ensemble about fatigue/value of continuing performance
- Uninterested in Pantages-only run or touring-only
- Production is available for licensing to theaters
What could 2015 look like?
- Touring could include a Boston Pops tour or Christmas with Cantus tour (Cantus only). See notes on fees and expenses.
- Likely that HTT and TLD would continue AIC at Pantages, but without Cantus, possibly tour a theatrical production
- Cantus would use time formerly for AIC at home to expand Christmas home concerts to southern and northern suburbs; possibly St. Cloud and/or Rochester.
- With a timely decision, we could promote this year’s AIC as “last with Cantus” and be ahead of the pr buzz.
